Music is a little bit magical. It can raise or slow our heartbeat; get our limbs moving with no conscious thought; transform our mood; transport us back 10 years to a random night in Spain (just me?!) and so much more.
Music holds power within family life. Faced with a long car journey? Blast out some tunes to keep the little people happy in the back or sing nursery rhymes with actions on repeat for hours. A grumpy child who is hungry and dinner is not quite ready? Have a quick family disco in the kitchen until the oven timer beeps. An overtired child who is struggling to sleep? Put on a familiar comforting song and watch them gradually calm and settle. See? Magic!
But one of the greatest gifts music can bring to family life is the happy mood it creates. Scientific research has proven that listening to and playing enjoyable music releases the chemical dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is regarded as the main chemical of pleasure produced by our brain and it is directly linked to feelings of happiness and euphoria. In addition to this, add in some singing and you are also going to release endorphins, the dominant hormone associated with pleasure. See? Incorporate music into family life and you are on to a winner.
In our bundle we are encouraging you to have a go at making music as a family. David, our expert takes you though rhythms and how to ‘jam’ together. As well as evoking happy feelings it also gives a fantastic opportunity to develop communication and team building skills. In order to create rhythms together you absolutely must listen to one another and work as a unit. It also gives the small people a chance to lead and feel important – if you make them the ‘kick drum’, they are leading the whole rhythm. More than anything it is great fun to make music together as a family and you never know where it might lead ….. you may turn out to be the next Von Trapps 😊 .
